The PSAT® Score Calculator is a smart, free tool that helps students estimate their total PSAT/NMSQT score (out of 1520) based on their raw scores from practice tests or official exams. It also calculates the Selection Index used to determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility.
Whether you’re preparing for the 2025 Digital PSAT or analyzing a practice test, this calculator provides instant insights into how many correct answers you need for your goal score.
The PSAT/NMSQT® (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test offered by the College Board and co-sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It is designed to:
Prepare students for the SAT
Qualify U.S. juniors for the National Merit Scholarship Program
Provide feedback on college readiness
🔄 As of 2023, the PSAT is now fully digital, aligned with the new SAT format.
Section | Time (minutes) | Questions | Score Range |
---|---|---|---|
Reading & Writing (RW) | 64 min | ~54 | 160–760 |
Math | 70 min | ~44 | 160–760 |
Total | 134 min | ~98 | 320–1520 |
Each section is adaptive, meaning the second module adjusts in difficulty based on your performance in the first module.
The calculator takes your raw scores (number of correct answers) from:
Reading & Writing (out of ~54)
Math (out of ~44)
It then applies College Board’s raw-to-scaled score conversion tables to estimate your:
Scaled section scores (out of 760 each)
Total score (sum of both sections, out of 1520)
Selection Index (used for National Merit eligibility)
Section | Raw Score | Scaled Score Range |
---|---|---|
Reading & Writing | ~54 | 160–760 |
Math | ~44 | 160–760 |
Total Score | — | 320–1520 |
Selection Index | — | 48–228 |
🔢 Selection Index Formula:
(Reading & Writing Score ÷ 10 × 2) + (Math Score ÷ 10)
To qualify for the National Merit Semifinalist status, your Selection Index must meet or exceed your state’s cutoff (typically 209–223, depending on the state).
Example:
RW Score = 700 → (700 ÷ 10) × 2 = 140
Math Score = 680 → (680 ÷ 10) = 68
Selection Index = 140 + 68 = 208
