Children’s Privacy Policy

Introduction

SlyAcademy is committed to protecting the privacy of our youngest users. This Children’s Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information from children under the age of 18, with special attention to children under 13, in compliance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable international regulations (such as GDPR provisions on children’s data). It is designed to be read by parents or guardians as well as young users (in understandable language).

Our general Privacy Policy also provides information on data handling for all users; this Children’s Privacy Policy provides additional details specifically for children’s data and should be read in conjunction.

Parental Consent: If a user is under 18, we require parental or guardian consent for them to use certain features of SlyAcademy that involve personal data. By allowing your child to use SlyAcademy, you (the parent/guardian) agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not allow your child to use our site or provide any personal information.

Information We Collect from Children

SlyAcademy has minimized data collection for minors to only what is reasonably necessary for them to participate in our educational offeringsgocoderz.com. The types of personal information we might collect from a child (with appropriate consent) include:

  • Account Information: If a child under 18 registers for an account (for features like tracking quiz progress or saving preferences), we may collect a username, password, and parent or guardian’s email address. We use the parent’s email to provide notice and seek consent, as well as to communicate about the child’s account. We strongly encourage children not to use their real full name as a username (and for children under 13, we may disallow it), to protect their identitygocoderz.com.

  • Personal Details (Limited): We do not require children to disclose more personal info than necessary. For instance, we do not ask for a child’s home address, phone number, or school name just to use the site. We might ask for birthdate or age to validate their age (ensuring COPPA compliance) but will not retain that beyond verification purposes. If a child participates in a contest or feedback survey (with parental consent), we might collect whatever info is needed for that (like an email to send a prize), but we’ll inform parents and seek consent specifically for that activity.

  • Usage Data: Like all users, when a child browses SlyAcademy, we automatically collect certain information via analytics and log files: e.g., IP address, device type, browser info, and site usage logs (what pages were viewed, at what time, etc.). We use this data to improve the site and ensure functionality. For children, we either do not use any analytics that involve profile building, or we ensure it’s done in compliance with COPPA (for example, Google Analytics can be configured not to collect demographics on child-directed sections). Usage data may be collected through cookies (see our Cookie Policy). We avoid non-essential cookies for known child users or seek consent via the parent.

  • Content Contributions: Generally, we either disallow public posting features for users under 13 or we moderate them heavily. If a child (especially 13-17) is allowed to post content (like a comment or question), we advise them not to share personal information. We make efforts to strip out or reject posts that contain personal data (such as full name, email, phone number) of minors, but there is a chance something slips through if a child disregards guidance. We treat any such disclosure as personal information and will remove it if discovered.

  • School Use (if applicable): In some cases, SlyAcademy might be used in a classroom context. If an educator creates accounts for students or monitors progress, we might collect class identifiers or teacher’s contact info. We would ensure that the school or teacher has obtained parental consent on our behalf if that’s the route taken (as permitted under COPPA for school-authorized use).

We do not condition a child’s participation in an activity on the child providing more personal information than is reasonably necessarygocoderz.com. For example, if a child wants to do practice quizzes, we might not require any registration at all to just take quizzes (though registering might allow saving progress).

How We Use Children’s Information

We use the limited personal information we collect from children only to provide and support the SlyAcademy service, ensure a safe environment, and as permitted by law. Specifically:

  • Account operation: Username and password allow the child to log in and use features like saving quiz scores or bookmarking content. The parent’s email is used to verify consent, communicate account activation, and send any necessary account-related notifications (like password resets or policy updates).

  • Site functionality: Technical data (IP, device info, cookies) helps us deliver content correctly (e.g., adapting to mobile) and maintain performance.

  • Customization: If the site offers customization (like saving favorite subjects), that data is used to make the user’s experience consistent and enjoyable.

  • Communication: We might use the parent’s email (or child’s email for 13-17 with permission) to send newsletters or updates only if the parent has opted into that. By default, children are not added to any marketing or newsletter lists without explicit opt-in by the parent. We might send occasional educational notifications (like “New course available!”) but parents can opt out at any time.

  • Safety and moderation: If the child can interact with others (comments, etc.), we may use automated filters or human moderators to review what they post, mainly to remove personal info or inappropriate content. This is more a protective measure than a “use” of their info, but it means their posts may be seen by staff/moderators.

  • Internal Analytics: We may internally analyze how children use the site (e.g., which topics are most viewed by younger students) to improve our content and structure. These analytics are typically on aggregated data. We do not create individual profiles of children for marketing or behavioral advertising. We do not serve targeted ads to children. In fact, as a rule, SlyAcademy does not have ads, and certainly not any personalized ads to minors.

We do not sell children’s personal information. We do not provide children’s personal data to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

Disclosure of Children’s Information

SlyAcademy does not share a child’s personal information with third parties except in very limited scenarios, such as:

  • Service Providers: Like any website, we use trusted third-party service providers to support operations (e.g., cloud hosting, database hosting, or support ticket systems). These providers may process technical data or account info on our behalf. We ensure via contracts that they use any personal information only to provide services to us and not for other purposes. They are obligated to keep such information confidential and secure. For example, if our database is hosted on a cloud service, that provider technically stores the data, but they don’t access it or use it for themselves.

  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, for instance in response to a court order or a subpoena, or to law enforcement to the extent permitted by law (and ideally with notice to the parent unless legally prohibited).

  • To Protect Safety: If the information suggests someone is in danger or a crime is being committed (for instance, a child shares something that indicates abuse or self-harm), we might share details with appropriate authorities or help services, consistent with our duty to protect users.

  • Business Transfer: If SlyAcademy were ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, and user information (including children’s info) were part of that transaction, we would ensure the successor entity is bound by the same privacy commitments. Parents would be notified and given choices as required by law (e.g., the opportunity to consent to any new handling or to delete data).

We do not make a child’s personal information publicly available. Other users will not see personal details of your child. Even if a child posts content (like a forum post), we would recommend using a pseudonym username and never revealing personal info. We design any interactive features to minimize direct sharing of private info.

Parental Rights and Control

As a parent or legal guardian, you have the following rights regarding your child’s personal information on SlyAcademy:

  • Review: You can request to review any personal information we have collected from your child. This likely would include things like the account info (username, parent email) and any content the child has provided. To protect the child’s privacy, we will need to verify the identity of the requesting parent (for example, by having you email us from the same address we have on file, or other verification).

  • Deletion: You can request that we delete the personal information we have collected from your child. Note that if you request deletion of a child’s account data, this likely means we will have to delete their account and they will no longer have access to any features tied to that account. We will gladly do so—keeping only whatever may be required by law or absolutely necessary for internal purposes. For instance, we might retain a record that an account existed to document that we obtained consent, etc., but we would delete personal details.

  • Consent Withdrawal: You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. If you change your mind about allowing your child to use SlyAcademy, let us know. We will deactivate and/or delete the child’s account information as appropriate.

  • Refusal of Further Collection: You can refuse to permit us to collect any more personal information from your child. (This may mean we have to terminate the child’s ability to log in or participate in certain features, but they could still use the site in a logged-out mode for general browsing.)

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at [email protected] (or whatever contact method is given). We may ask for verification info to ensure you are the parent/guardian. For example, we might reply with a code that we require you to respond with, or other authentication steps.

We will respond to parental requests promptly, typically within 7-10 days. Deletion requests will be handled as soon as feasible, in compliance with applicable law. Note: some data may remain in backups for a short period, but we will not restore or use it except if required for safety or legal reasons.

Parental Consent Process

When a child under 13 attempts to register on SlyAcademy (or provide personal info in any way), we follow COPPA’s “verifiable parental consent” procedures. In practice, our process is:

  1. Initial Minimal Collection: We ask for the child’s birthdate or age to know if they’re under 13. If they are, we then ask for a parent’s email address. We may allow the child to enter a username and password at this stage, but we won’t activate the account or retain any personal info beyond what’s needed to seek consent until consent is obtained.

  2. Direct Notice to Parent: We send an email to the provided parent/guardian email explaining that the child wants to register on SlyAcademy, what information would be collected, how it’s used, and a link to this Children’s Privacy Policy. We ask the parent to provide consent for the account. We might include a consent form or a unique link the parent can click to consent.

  3. Verifiable Consent Method: We use a method reasonably designed to ensure the person providing consent is the parent. For example, we might ask the parent to complete a brief form and sign it, or reply with a statement of consent. In some cases, we might require a nominal credit card transaction (like a $0.50 charge) to verify identity (the credit card info is not stored and the charge could be donated or refunded), but we try to avoid burden on the parent. Alternate methods could include calling a toll-free number or video conferencing – but email confirmation combined with a follow-up check might suffice under COPPA if it’s for internal use only.

  4. Account Activation: Once consent is received and verified, we activate the child’s account and send a welcome message to both child (if they provided an email, and if 13 or older) and parent. If we do not receive consent, we delete the parent contact and any child info collected in the interim (after a reasonable period or after a few attempts to get consent fail).

For users 13-17, in many jurisdictions (like the U.S.), parental consent may not be strictly required by law, but we still seek parental involvement because we want parents aware. Under GDPR, the age of consent for data processing can be up to 16, so for EU users under 16 we treat it similar to under-13 COPPA process.

Cookies and Tracking – Children

Our use of cookies for known child users is very limited. We do not allow third-party behavioral trackers on pages likely to be used by children. We might still use functional or analytics cookies, but as per COPPA:

  • We either treat analytics data for children as internal operations (allowed under COPPA) or obtain parental consent for using cookies that aren’t strictly necessary. Our cookie banner or settings will reflect this.

  • We don’t use cookies to show targeted ads or track children across different websites.

  • If a child is using the site without logging in and without parental consent, we attempt not to collect personal info. For example, if an unregistered user might be a child, any cookie identifiers we use are not tied to personal data and are only for things like maintaining the session or preferences. IP addresses in server logs are a grey area but considered transient usage data.

Parents can disable cookies via browser settings (see our Cookie Policy), though certain educational features might need them (like staying logged in). We ensure that the site is still accessible in a read-only way if cookies are blocked.

Data Retention for Children

We retain personal information collected from a child for only as long as necessary to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected and to ensure security of our users, or as required by lawgocoderz.com. In practice:

  • If a parent withdraws consent or if the account is inactive for a long time (e.g., the child never logs in for over a year), we may delete the account and associated info.

  • We might periodically purge data associated with children to minimize retention. For instance, server logs containing IP addresses might be rotated and anonymized within a shorter period for child-identified traffic.

  • Backup data including children’s info is kept only for disaster recovery and is protected. If live data is deleted, we will ensure it’s also removed from backups when those backups cycle out (our backup retention might be, say, 30 days).

  • If required by law to retain certain data (for example, if a payment was made for a membership by a parent – hypothetical since we don’t charge, or if there’s a legal dispute), we will retain only what’s necessary and securely isolate it from normal use.

International Considerations for Children’s Data

If the child is in the EU or UK, we comply with GDPR/UK GDPR which requires parental consent for processing personal data of children under a certain age (which varies by country, from 13 to 16). We treat that similarly to COPPA consent.

If we become aware a child under the minimum age in their country has provided personal information without parental consent, we will delete it (similar to our COPPA approach).

Links to Other Sites

SlyAcademy content might contain links to external websites (like references to Wikipedia, educational videos, etc.). We do not control those sites, and they may have different privacy practices, especially regarding children. We encourage parents to supervise their kids’ internet usage. If a child follows a link off our site, the parent should be aware and possibly limit that if the external site is not child-friendly.

We do our best to ensure that any external resources we link in child-oriented content are themselves reputable and appropriate for children (for example, linking to a kid-friendly science video). But we cannot guarantee their compliance or content, so parental oversight is important.

Changes to this Children’s Privacy Policy

If we make material changes to our practices regarding children’s personal information, we will first obtain new parental consent if needed (for any new purposes that require it). We will also update this policy and change the “Last updated” date. We may notify parents via email of significant changes.

We encourage parents to review this policy periodically with your child so you both understand how their information is handled.
