How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
You can input your current class grade in two ways:
- Percentage Input: Type your current grade as a percentage in the "Current Class Grade" field. The letter grade dropdown will automatically update.
- Letter Grade Dropdown: Select your current letter grade from the dropdown menu. The percentage field will auto-fill with the estimated percentage for that letter grade.
Provide your target final class grade:
- Percentage Input: Type the desired grade you aim to achieve in the percentage field. The letter grade dropdown will update accordingly.
- Letter Grade Dropdown: Select your desired letter grade from the dropdown. The percentage field will auto-fill.
Input the weight of your final exam as a percentage of the total class grade. For example, if the final exam is worth 40% of your grade, enter 40.
Click the "Calculate Required Final Exam Grade" button. The calculator will display the minimum score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall class grade.
Example
Assume the following:
- Current Grade (CG): 85%
- Desired Grade (DG): 90%
- Final Exam Weight (WF): 30%
Calculation:
Current Weight (WC) = 100% - WF = 70%
Required Final Exam Grade = [(DG - (CG × WC/100)) × 100] / WF
Required Final Exam Grade = [(90 - (85 × 70/100)) × 100] / 30
Required Final Exam Grade ≈ 101.67%
You would need to score approximately 101.67% on the final exam, which is not feasible. This indicates that achieving a 90% overall grade is unlikely unless extra credit is available.
The calculator uses the following formula:
Required Final Exam Grade = [(Desired Grade - (Current Grade × Current Weight)) / Final Exam Weight] × 100
Where:
- Current Grade: Your grade before the final exam.
- Desired Grade: The overall grade you aim to achieve.
- Current Weight: The percentage of your grade determined so far (100% - Final Exam Weight).
- Final Exam Weight: The percentage of your total grade that the final exam is worth.
- If the required final exam grade is greater than 100%, achieving your desired grade may not be feasible.
- If the required final exam grade is less than 0%, you have already secured your desired grade.
- Ensure all inputs accurately reflect your current standing and goals.
- Consult your syllabus or instructor to verify grade weights and policies.
